The Philippine Statistics Authority XII kicked-off the observance of 2021 National Women’s Month Celebration with a virtual Opening Ceremony.
Cognizant to this year’s thematic focus “Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya!”, Ms. Mary Joy M. Chiu, Nurse V and GAD Focal Point of the Department of Health XII tackled the topic Promoting Gender Equality in the COVID-19 Response and Recovery. According to her, gender matters in COVID-19 response and recovery as the pandemic will have a disproportionate negative effect on women and their employment opportunities. The effects of this shock are likely to outlast the actual epidemic. ·The COVID-19 crisis can bring about some changes that have the potential to reduce gender inequality in the labour market in the long term. According to
Ms. Chiu, in terms of occupations, more men than women will easily adapt to the change in work environment during the crisis. Conversely, more women will potentially face the loss of employment, which is the opposite of the pattern when in normal economic downturns.
She also discussed the Responses in Education and Adolescent Reproductive Health, and other DOH Programs.
PSA XII has lined-up series of webinars and activities for the month-long celebration of National Women’s Month. The activities will highlight gender-related topics and in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic awareness.
According to Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), this year’s campaign is different from the previous ones because it is set in the COVID-19 pandemic backdrop, which posed both challenges and opportunities for women. Hence, this year’s observance highlights women’s participation in battling the pandemic as well as discusses gender issues exacerbated by the pandemic. It is the time to delve deep into the gender issues that emerged or felt during the health crisis, especially how women thrived despite the circumstances, and share support systems and government programs that address women’s issues and concerns.
