PSA XII Conducts 2nd Level Training on Geotagging of Building Structures

Release Date:

Monday, 10 April 2017

Starting May 8, the PSA will conduct the geotagging of building structures of PSU samples for 2020 to 2021. The activity aims to identify and mark building structures in the digitized maps and putting pertinent geographical information and attributes for use in the various statistical undertakings of the PSA.

Prior to this, the PSA embarked on a five-year rolling technology-aided map updating scheme during the later part of 2016 to prepare for the application of spatial analysis and intelligent visualization of information using dynamic digitized maps. In September 2016, the PSA conducted the field updating of maps and the secondary sampling units (SSU) validation of PSU (primary sampling units) samples from 2016 to 2019.

Last April 4-7, 2017, the PSA XII conducted its 2nd Level Training at Sun City Suites in General Santos City. Participants to the said training were the Provincial Statistics Officers (PSOs), Provincial Focal Persons (PFPs), and the hired Map Data Screeners (MDSs) from the provinces. Ms. Ma. Eileen A. Berdeprado, the Officer-in-Charge of the Statistical Operations and Coordination Division (SOCD) of RSSO XII and Regional Director Atty. Maqtahar L. Manulon were also present during the training.

Mr. Regie T. Lemana of PSA – Sultan Kudarat and Mr. Wilmer S. Bacera of RSSO XII who both attended the 1st Level Training in Pasig City served as the resource persons. They were assisted by Mr. Edward Donald F. Eloja, the regional focal person and Mr. Alfonso Crueta, Jr., a mapper from PSA Central Office.

The participants, in particular the MDSs, were taught on how to extract grid maps from Google Earth, geo-reference the grid maps using ground control points (GCPs), load shape files into the tablets for use by the map data collectors during field operations, and download geotagged maps and building structures from the tablets to desktop computers for further processing.

A field practice was also conducted to test the tablets and geotagging applications to be used in the project. The PFPs and MDSs, together with their PSOs, visited PSU 187 of Barangay Dadiangas East, General Santos City to practice geotagging of building structures in the said area.

The tablet-aided geotagging project will run for four (4) months from May 8, 2017 to September 6, 2017 and will cover a total of 1,024 primary sampling units region-wide.
