YEAR-ON-YEAR INFLATION RATES
Headline inflation rate or the annual rate of change on the prices of goods and services in the market basket for all income households in SOCCSKSARGEN Region decreased to 3.8% in June 2024 from 3.2% the previous month. This is 0.1 percentage point higher than the 3.7% national headline inflation for the current month under review.
Cotabato Province, with an inflation of 3.7% was the highest contributor to SOCCSKSARGEN Region’s 3.8% headline inflation in June 2024. It was followed by Sultan Kudarat Province, at 5.5%; South Cotabato, 3.2%; General Santos City, 2.7%; Sarangani, 4.2%; and Cotabato City, 4.3%.
Meanwhile, South Cotabato Province was the highest contributor to the downtrend in June 2024 inflation in SOCCSKSARGEN Region.
From 2019 to 2023, the annual average inflation rate on the prices of goods and services in the market basket was highest in 2022 and 2023 at 5.6 percent and the lowest was recorded in 2019 at 2.2 percent.
In October 2019, at -0.3%, was the lowest monthly inflation recorded from 2019 to 2023. On the other hand, the highest monthly inflation rate was posted in January 2023 and February 2023 at 7.4%.
Headline Inflation for All Items in 2023 exhibited a downtrend from 4.9% in March to 3.6% in July. Inflation started to increase in August until September and eases in October to November. A slight increase was noted in December. In 2024, a downtrend was noted in January and increased in February by 0.9 percentage point, at 5.0 percent. A downtrend was noted again in April until June (Table 2).
From June 2023 to June 2024, the highest headline inflation was recorded in September 2023 at 5.4% while the lowest headline inflation was recorded in July 2023 at 3.6 percent (Figure 1).
Among the commodity groups, nine (9) commodity groups exhibited lower price gains, namely:
Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (from 6.9% to 6.4%); Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (from 4.2% to 3.9%); Recreation, Sports, and Culture (from 4.0% to 3.4%); Personal Care and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (from 2.8% to 2.7%); Health (from 3.7% to 2.5%); Transport (from 2.5% to 2.0%); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (from 2.2% to 1.6%); Clothing and Footwear (from 1.6% to 1.3%); and Housing, Water; Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (from 2.0% to -0.4%).
On the other hand, only Restaurant and Accommodation Services posted a price hike in June 2024 at 4.2% in June 2024 from 3.9% the previous month.
Meanwhile, Information and Communication, Education Services, and Financial Services, with an inflation of 0.3%, 2.9%, and -0.1% respectively had no change or negligible change from the previous month’s rate (Table 3)
The major contributors to the 6.8% inflation on the Food index in June 2024 were Cereals and cereal products; Fish and other seafood, and Meat and other parts of slaughtered land Animals.
Commodities that contributed largely to the price downtrend of Food were Fish and other seafood; Cereals and cereal products; and Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses.
Definition of Terms
Base Period/Year - this refers to the period, usually a year, at which the index number/points is set to 100. It is the point of index number series.
Headline Inflation - measures changes in the cost of living based on movements in the prices of a specified basket of major commodities. It refers to the annual rate of change or the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index.
Consumer Price Index - the average retail prices of a fixed basket of goods and services commonly purchased by households relative to a base year.
Inflation Rate - the annual rate of change or year-on-year change in the CPI expressed in percent.
Market Basket - refers to a sample of goods and services that are commonly purchased and bought by an average Filipino household.
Weights - a system that considers the relevance of the components of the Index.
