YEAR-ON-YEAR INFLATION RATES


The headline inflation or the annual rate of change on the prices of goods and services in the market basket of South Cotabato decreased to 3.2 percent in June 2024. It was lower by 3.3 percentage points from the same month last year at 6.5 percent and 1.3 percentage points lower from May 2024 at 4.5 percent. South Cotabato’s inflation was lower by 0.5 percentage point compared to the national estimates of 3.7 percent, respectively. The province average inflation stood at 5.1 percent (Figure 1).
 

 

The major contributors to the downtrend in the province’s inflation rate for the month of June 2024 were Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels at 1.1 percent, Transport at 1.2 percent, and Recreation, Sport and Culture and 3.0 percent.

Lower annual increments were noted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

a.    Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, from 1.6% to 1.5%
b.    Clothing and Footwear, from 1.7% to 1.2%
c.    Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels, from 8.7% to 1.1%
d.    Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance, from 1.6% to 1.3%
e.    Transport, from 1.6% to 1.2%
f.    Recreation, Sport and Culture, from 4.4% to 3.0%

Major commodity group which registered higher inflation are Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, from 5.6% to 5.7% and Health, from 3.1% to 3.4%.

The rest of the commodity groups: Information and Communication (0.0%), Education Services (4.7%), Restaurants and Accommodation Services (1.3%), Financial Services (-0.1%), and Personal Care, and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (2.7%) maintained their previous month’s inflation rates (Table 2).

Meanwhile, inflation for food decreased to 6.0 percent in June 2024 from 5.9 percent in May 2024. In June 2023, food inflation was higher at 6.9 percent (Table 3).

The top three food groups that contributed to the decrease in food inflation were Milk, other dairy products and eggs at 1.9%, Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals at 0.1%, and Cereals and cereal products at 19.0%.
